Pharmacy Technician

Scope of Assigned Duties and Responsibilities Controlled substances:
Fills all outpatient-controlled substance prescriptions via ScriptPro system; Dispenses controlled substances to Omnicells in accordance with established procedures; Deducts quantities dispensed from vault inventory in VISTA; Maintains an accurate perpetual inventory of all controlled substances; Completes a full controlled substance inventory count three times a week; Maintains appropriate inventory levels in coordination with Lead Technician for procurement; Trains pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and controlled substance inspectors on all pharmacy-controlled substance procedures as defined in relevant VHA Handbooks and local policy; Monitors pharmacists and technicians for compliance with controlled substance policies and procedures to assure accountability; Investigates all reported discrepancies and works with Lead Technician and Associate Chief for Pharmacy Operations to resolve discrepancies; Performs balance adjustments when necessary; Generates all required reports in cases of controlled substance loss; Maintains all controlled substances held for destruction in accordance with established procedures; Maintains VA All Hazards Cache controlled substance inventory in accordance with established procedures; Cooperates with facility-controlled substance inspectors to complete monthly unannounced inspections; Cooperates with the facility accountable officer designee to accurately receive controlled substance inventory. Accurately prepares and labels inpatient and outpatient medications for final review by a pharmacist in a timely manner. Accurately receives new stock and returned stock into inventory according to established policies, procedures and regulations regarding inventory record keeping. Correctly operates and maintains complicated pharmacy equipment including ScriptPro and unit-dose packaging equipment according to manufacturers' recommendations and established Standard Operating Procedures. Accurately replenishes controlled and non-controlled substances in Omnicell units in a timely manner. Assists medical center staff and patients, either by phone or in person, concerning drug distribution, refill requests, mail and general triaging of requests for the pharmacists, and refers to a pharmacy appropriately. Compounds hazardous and non-hazardous sterile, and non-sterile products by selecting, calculating and measuring the appropriate ingredients; mixing in a safe and effective manner utilizing aseptic technique when appropriate; inspects final product for accuracy, suitability and elegance; labels the product, and maintains records of the process. Performs final review of medication prepared by another technician to be dispensed to inpatient areas. Accurately completes VISTA documentation including units dispensed and automatic replenishment. Assists department leadership in data collection for process monitoring and improvement activities. Monitors working area inventory needs and relays information appropriately to the Lead Technician for procurement. Monitors temperature of Pharmacy and Omnicell medication refrigerators and maintains temperature logs in accordance with established procedures. Answers incoming phone calls from Veterans and internal customers and assists with requests for refills or information Work Schedule:

United States Citizenship:

Experience:
A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience. English Language Proficiency:
Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English. Certification:
Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above. Grade Determinations (GS-07):

Experience:
One year experience at the next lower level (GS-06), and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level:
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (GS-07):
Ability to evaluate, analyze workflow, and coordinate work activities Ability to independently gather, evaluate, and analyze data to generate reports and/or for other projects/statistical purposes Knowledge of pharmacy policies and procedures sufficient to train and orient new employees and other staff Comprehensive knowledge of the operation and care of specialized pharmaceutical equipment Comprehensive knowledge of the procurement and formulary process Comprehensive knowledge of investigational drug policies and procedures Comprehensive knowledge of controlled substance polices and procedures and the ability to identify and investigate discrepancies in these policies and procedures Comprehensive knowledge of and ability to analyze data in VA information systems Certification:
PTCB certification is required at this grade level and above. References:

Occasional standing and walking, lifting not to exceed 15 pounds, use of both hands and fingers, ability to use the computer. The work is primarily performed while sitting, although some work may require periods of standing. The regular and recurring work of the position involves sitting at a desk, attending meetings and conferences, etc. and occasional visits to activity work sites. Occasional use of an automobile or public conveyance may be required.

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
